The archipelago of Madeira constitutes a group of islands of Portugal, situated in the Atlantic ocean. It is formed by a total of seven islands and two islets, of which the two main and two secondary ones the only inhabited permanently are the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, the Big Wild and Little Wild.
The relief, as well as the exposure to prevailing winds, means that there are several micro-climates in the island, which, together with the exotic vegetation, is an important attraction factor for tourism, the main activity of the region. Precipitation is higher on the north coast than on the south coast. There are no major thermal variations throughout the year keeping the climate mild.
